Course Objective

To give students the skills needed to be able to perform harmonic analysis of four-part chorale and/or piano scores (including defining nonharmonic tones) both orally and in writing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The ability to identify the fundamental rules of four-part writing and read the parts horizontally and vertically;
2   The ability to identify and properly mark nonharmonic tones, including passing and neighboring tones, appoggiaturas, suspensions and anticipations;
3   The ability to use analysis to recognize and mark the primary and relative keys of a musical work in any tonality;
4   The ability to spell triads and dominant seventh chords and their inversions using proper key signatures;
5   The ability to notate the harmonic analysis of a four-part chorale and/or piano piece.
