Course Objective

After this course the students will gain following behavioral characteristics
1. To apply for the scientific method to educational problems
2. To be able to develop educational measurement tools.
3. To chose and apply proper sampling techniques
4. To chose and apply proper statistical analysis techniques in processes of hypothesis testing
5. Write research project

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   How to construct and interpret data summarization procedures for quantitative and qualitative data.
2   Understand the importance of sampling
3   How the statistics obtained from samples can be used to make statistical inference about population parameters
4   Construct and interpret confidence interval estimate of a population mean and statistical equivalency of two populations
5   Formulate and test hypotheses about a population mean and understanding the duality between tests of hypotheses and confidence interval
6   Criticize former researches
7   Develop scientific attitude
8   Develop critical and analytical thinking

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Reviewing former knowledge: Scientific method, functions of science, scientific attitude and ethics, science, technology, innovation.
2 Theoretical framework of the researches. Research problems and models. Quantitative researches, qualitative researches, historical researches.
3 Data, data collection, processing of data. Quantitative and qualitative data.
4 Variables, measurements and scales. Errors in educational measurement, Measurement means in education. Examples of various measurement tools.
5 How to develop Likert Type scale. Increasing reliability and validity, Construct validity: Basic idea of factor analysis as data reduction method. Principal Component analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis.
6 How to develop achievement tests. Increasing test reliability and validity. Ways of calculating reliability of multiple-choice tests: Test re test method, Spearman-Brown formula, KR20 Formula and KR21 Formula.
7 Exercises, correction and evaluation of the students papers.
8 Midterm exam
9 Population and samples, sampling techniques. Random sampling, accidental and convenience samples and examples
10 Testing statistical hypotheses: Confidence intervals. Ho and H1 Hypothesis.
11 Proportions, percentages and related hypothesis testing techniques. Non parametric statistics, Chi-square, related researches.
12 t test, analysis of variance. (One factor, three factor, multi factor) Analysis of covariance, and examples
13 The measurement of relationship. Linear and multiple regression analysis and examples
14 Writing the research report. Evaluating previous researches. New trends in educational research and their limitations.
15 Final exam
