Course Objective

Learning of Physical Land degradation concept, the causes and results of the land degradation.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definitions and extent of physical land degradation
2 The processes and occurrence of soil compaction and crust formation. The results and effects of soil compaction and crust formation.
3 The occurrence of waterlogging as a physical land degradation type. The results and effects of waterlogging problem.
4 The occurrence of water erosion as a physical land degradation type. The results and effects of water erosion.
5 The siltation and stoniness in lower basin related to water erosion.
6 Physical land degradation which caused by wind erosion.
7 The occupation of fertile agricultural areas by wind erosion. Other types of erosion (mass movement etc) and their effects.
8 General Review, Course Evaluation
9 The dimensions and results of physical land degradation in Turkey and the World.
10 The evaluation of the results of land degradation in Sahel region.
11 Group studies and activities related to land degradation.

The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the term work scores in semester. The exam dates will be indicated in the lesson plan. As the exam dates become definite, the previously announced dates may change.

In-class participation and written homework, end-of-semester final homework and short report presentation.

1. It is obligated to continue to at least 70% of lessons .
2. Behaviours such as copying in exams, clashing and making intials in the publications will be concluded with the opening of a disciplinary investigation.
3. The instructor has right to make quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
