Course Objective

The objective of this course is to have the students discover the relation between language and gender, to questionise sterotypical gender roles which are expressed and sustained by language in the society and to build up a critical view on how gender is morphologically, semantically or pragmatically coded and constructed in language; and also have the students comprehend feminist theory for gender roles and have them gain sufficient insight about this theory to enable them to investigate the topic and discuss the data.

1   Explain the relationship between language and gender
2   Identify stereotyped gender roles in a written or visual text
3   Explain feminist theory and its key concepts
4   Explain gender roles within the framework of feminist theory
5   Questionise the relationship between language, gender and society within the framework of feminist theory
6   Doing research on the relation between language and gender presented implicitly and/or explicitly in texts within the framework of feminist theory and prepare an article on it.
