Course Objective

The aim of this course is to create a recognition on students about the topics of interpretation and meaning in Islamic Sciences, the conceptions used in classical Islamic sciences and various aspects of evaluation and interpretation in classical Islamic sciences.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students become acquainted with the basic methods used in Islamic Sciences. 2   Students explain the methodological differences of classical Islamic Sciences. 3   Students apprehend the basic concepts of classical Islamic sciences and their development processes.

Week Subject Description 1 The frame of problems of meaning and interpretation in Islamic Sciences: Explanation, Interpretation, Commentary, Critique 2 Relation between Science, Truth, Meaning and Interpretation on which Epistemology of Islamic Sciences is grounded 3 As methodological knowledge of Islamic Sciences "Usul Sciences": Relation between Jurisprudence, Theology, Quranic Interpretation, Hadith 4 The schools of 'usul' ( sources) as interpretation methods: Tradition (Rivayet), Reasoning ( Dirayet) and literal and allegorical interpretation approaches 5 Linguistic Methods: Grammatical and rhetorical analysis 6 Using and semantic connection. Logical analysis: Comparison, Deduction, Analogy, Proving 7 Rational analysis: Critiques and question- answer methods: Negate, Imagined and consistent 8 Mid-term Exam 9 Historical Methods: Context Analysis 10 Semantics and Philology: Conceptual meaning and historical change 11 Practical Frame: Content Analysis 12 Rational Frame 13 Instinctual Frame
