Course Objective

The aim of the course is to discuss the ideologies framing Turkish political life, upon a background of the rise and evolution of modern ideologies and political movements. The course examines the origins and evolution of various ideologies in Turkey, basically of liberalism, nationalism, conservatism, Islamism and socialism. Besides the general picture of these currents of thought, main ideas of some key proponents of these ideologies will be studied.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Acquire advanced knowledge on the key ideas and ideologies affecting political life in Turkey since the 19th century
2   Compare and contrast different approaches to political issues in order to identify the contested nature of politics and develop a critical outlook.
3   Identify the social, political and intellectual context in which ideologies emerged in order to comprehend the interrelation of political concepts (theory) and everyday political life (practice)
4   Deliver elaborate and well articulated presentations of academic material to demonstrate a proficiency in presentation skills
5   Write a well-designed academic paper to demonstrate a proficiency in academic writing skills

Participation into class discussions and paper presentation will constitute 30% of the grade.

Assessment Criteria

The students are expected to
1. Explain the basic concepts, assumptions and ideas of political thinkers taught in class in a clear and consistent manner.
2. Compare and contrast different ideologies and thinkers with regard to certain common criteria.
3. Describe the social and political context in which a thinker lived and how this is reflected in his theory.
4. Present and discuss learning material in an elaborate and well organized manner.
5. Submit a well-designed research paper.

Course Policies and Rules

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Students must read the learning material and participate in the discussions.
4. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise they will not be accepted.
