Course Objective

To learn the basic mechanisms of respiratory system physiology; to understand the changes of these mechanisms in diseases

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the mechanics of lung ventilation
2   Define the mechanism of gas exchange in the respiratory membrane
3   To understand the mechanisms of transport of oxygen and gases in the blood
4   Define the factors that change the ventilation / perfusion rate
5   To explain the mechanisms of respiration

2 Respiratory Mechanics
3 Gas exchange in the respiratory membrane
4 Physiological characteristics of pulmonary circulation
5 Blood flow and influencing factors in lungs
6 Factors affecting ventilation and perfusion rate
7 Transport of gases to lungs and tissues
8 Mid-term exam.
9 Compliance, airway resistance and respiratory action and factors affecting airway resistance
10 Regulation of respiration during exercise
11 Central and neural control of respiration
12 Chemical control of respiration
13 Pulmonary function tests and interpretation of results
14 Basic physiological mechanisms in respiratory failure
15 Final exam.
