Course Objective

This course aims to present the key aspects of diagnostic bacteriology to the MSc students

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to explain the principles of the diagnostic tests used in the clinical bacterology laboratory.
2   Be able to define the usage of different tests in diagnostic bacteriology
3   Be able to define the hazards and biosafety rules and regulations that should be followed in a diagnostic laboratory
4   Be able to connect diagnostic tests to certain bacteria grown in the clinical bacteriology laboratory
5   Be able to use the tests to identify different species of similar bacteria
6   Be able to use bacterial identification test methods
7   Be able to analyse the bacteria in a specimen by using the appropriate diagnostic tests and build an identification scheme

1 Introduction to diagnostic bacteriology The hazards and Biosafety rules to be followed in diagnostic bacterology laboratory Basic applications in the daignostic bacteriology laboratory and the test principles
2 Basic laboratory operations Quality control, Quality assurance
3 Gram positive bacilli
4 Gram negative cocci (Neisseria and Moraxella)
5 Gram negative bacilli I : Enterobacteriaceae
6 Gram negative bacilli- II: Nonfermentative bacteria (Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Burkholderia) and related species
7 Gram negative bacilli III: Vibrio, Campylobacter, Helicobacter Other Gram negative bacilli: Brucella, HACEK Legionella
8 Anaerobic Bacteriology
9 Mycobacterium spp.
10 Diagnostic bacteriology laboratory I
11 Diagnostic bacteriology laboratory II
12 Diagnostic bacteriology laboratory III

In addition to lectures and practicals, students are asked to prepare a Project in which the laboratory tests are used and prepare an oral presentation to the course director.
