Course Objective

Approach to International trade, logistics , transportation with a cargo point of view.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand the international approach to maritime business, cargo movement and trade 2   To learn cargo types and special requirements for each type 3   to learn the cargo handling facilities, cargo handling equipment, storage principles and cargo care principles 4   To get a broad approach to international rules and regulations on cargo carriage and being able to evaluate legal consequences when the need arises 5   To increase the awareness on the role of cargo carriage on environmental protection

Week Subject Description 1 Definition of cargo, basic definitions and intoduction 2 Historical approach to cargo and transportation 3 Cargo types I 4 Cargo types II 5 Dry cargo operations I 6 Dry cargo operations II (Grain and BC code) 7 Mid-Term Exam 8 Stability of dry cargo, rules & regulations 9 Container operations 10 Liquid cargoes in bulk carriage, surveys, regulations. 11 Obo, RoRo, heavy cargo vessels, reefers and other types 12 Pollution coused by cargo carriers, MARPOL, OPA 13 Storage, warehousing, cargo care (ventilation, fumigation etc), cost minimization. 14 Understanding the network around cargo operations, brokers, banks, carriers, stevedores, shippers, agents, ports and others.
