Course Objective

Radiation safety is an important issue in a variety of work locations such as regulators, universities, hospitals, research institutions, veterinary practices, radiation instrument detection manufacturers, irradiator facilities, first responders and defence. The instructional goals of this course are as follows: to provide a basic knowledge of radiation concepts and instruments available, to provide the participant with information concerning the effects and limits of radiation exposure and a basic knowledge of the work environment, methods of protection and equipment, and procedures for decontamination. In addition, to give information on requirements of a radiation protection program.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to recognize the differences of radioactive materials, identify and use radioactive units
2   Identify the different types of instruments and detectors.
3   Recognize internal and external radiation protection methods and identify proper protective equipment to be used.
4   Be knowledgeable of the requirements of a radiation protection program and explain the rules and regulations in the field.
5   Know the health effects associated with radiofrequency exposure to electromagnetic radiation .
