Course Objective

This course provides an understanding on how to manage health and safety risks associated with hazardous chemicals. The lesson will be helpful for the students who aim to conduct a business with chemicals in their workplace. These can be a manufacturer, importer or supplier of hazardous chemicals, or a business owner, who uses, handles, generates or stores hazardous chemicals at their workplace. This course applies to substances, mixtures and articles used, handled, generated or stored at the workplace which are defined as hazardous chemicals under the WHS Regulations. This course also applies to the generation of hazardous chemicals from work processes, for example toxic fumes released during welding. The fallowing industries can be given as examples which need the managing of risks for chemicals in their workplace: Agriculture, battery industry, chemical industry, electrical industry, explosives industry, food industry, gas industry, laboratories, metal production and manufacturing industry, mining industry, paint industry, paper industry, petroleum industry, pharmaceutical manufacture, plastic manufacture, textile industry and etc.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course the student is expected to manage the systematic classification and labellingof chemical hazards and the preparation and understanding of their safety data sheets (SDS).
2   The students should know how to use handle and storage of the hazardous chemicals.
3   The students should learn who has health and safety duties in relation to hazardous chemicals.
4   They will know what is required to manage the risks associated with hazardous chemicals
5   They will be able to consult the workers in their workplace.
