Course Objective

The aim of the lecture is to teach how to design and test the scientific computing using Octave and to solve scientific computing problems from a variety of disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and math.

1   Identifying the scientific problems that can be solved using Octave.
2   Have a basic knowledge of scientific computing as an analysis tool.
3   Have ability to use scientific computing structures.

2 Plotting Scatterplots, 2D and 3D graphics, image handling

4 Loops, loop-invariants, control flow, vector-operations as loops
5 Curve fitting
6 Modeling and simulation by difference equations
7 Statistics in Octave
8 Mid-term exam
9 Ordinary Differential Equations (initial-value ODE problems)
10 Optimization (Linear programming, non-linear)
11 SVD and Principal Component Analysis
12 Partial Differential Equations
13 Image processing
14 Scientific Computing Applications
15 Final Examination

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned and presented in a discussion session. In some weeks of the course, results of the homework given previously are discussed.
