Course Objective

The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with the systematic principles of animals, taxonomic categories, species and subspecies concept, taxonomic characters, variations, principles about naming of taxons, ethical principles for taxonomical zoology.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn development process of taxonomic zoology and taxonomical categories.
2   To realize description of species and population.
3   To adapt use of taxonomic characters and variation on studied species in taxonomic zoology.
4   To cite both an oral and documental statistical methods used in taxonomic zoology.
5   The importance of taxonomy and classification in zoology and to apply ethic rules in the present day.

1 Basic concepts in taxonomy, the history of taxonomy and its relationship with other biological sciences. Taxonomy, Systematic, Kingdom (Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia), Taxonomy in ancient times, Linneaus period, Charles Darwin and next stages, Period of population systematic, Relationship of taxonomy with other biological sciences
2 Works of Taxonomists and the problems met Analyses and alpha stage, Synthesis and beta stage, Biological and gamma stage
3 Taxonomic ranks Regnum, Phylum, Classis, Ordo, Familia, Genus
4 Species and subspecies concepts Species, Typological species concept, Nominalistic species concept, Biological species concept, Ecological species concept, Separation of species, according to different criteria, Varieties, subspecies and race concepts, Hybrid and cline concepts
5 Taxonomical characteristics Selection of characters, Morphological characters, Physiological characters, Ecological characters, Ethological characters, Geographical characters
6 Variations and their importance Non-genetic variations, Genetic variations, Importance s of variations
7 Statistics in taxonomy To use statistical method for variation analysis, To importance of samples series, Measurements and counts, Save measurements, To examine series with statistical methods, To show graphically measurements, counts and data.
