Course Objective

This course aims at listing the various scales and categories of conservation planning studies, understanding the role of design in the conservation with investigations be conducted on samples of Turkey and the world, presenting to design principles and improving the sustainabilitiy of the studies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Will be able to establish the place of design within conservation planning (comprehension)
2   Will be able to comment samples of various conservation studies (application)
3   Will be able to analyse the design elements and the effects of design in conservation planning (analysis)
4   Will be able to list the principles of design (knowledge)
5   Will be able to develop contemporary design solutions for problems (synthesis)

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The role and importance of design in conservation planning.
2 Analysis, design framework, zoning and intervention strategies in conservation plans on various scales.
3 Utilization of urban planning tools for heritage sites and possible contributions to design activities
4 Facades, flooring and street furnitures in urban conservation areas
5 Design projects / competitions and approaches related to conservation areas.
6 Use of heritage references in conservation areas as an input to design
7 Midterm Exam
8 Selection of conservation case study area and analyses for design assignment area will be announced
9 Functional and aesthetical considerations on case study area and transfer of obtained data into systematic data sets
10 Identification of positive and negative factors in case study area and further look into specific causes
11 Possible contributions of the design elements to conserve and develop recommendations in the case study area.
12 Submission and presentation of design studies (assignment) presentation of design studies interactively
13 Design principles of conservation planning (comparisons of the world and Turkey)
14 Suggestions of sustainability of design in conservation planning

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Samples of the various conservation areas will be offered in Turkey and around the world. Design principles of conservation areas will be experienced in the case study area.
