Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the optical, chemical, mechanical, magnetic and electrical properties of nanomaterials and to gain the ability to interpret the results obtained from the devices.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To give information about common characterization methods to determine the structure and composition of nanomaterials
2   To have a broad knowledge of the parameters affecting the properties of nanomaterials
3   To be able to understand the mechanical, magnetic, electrical and optical properties of nanomaterials and to be able to use the tools of characterizing the material.
4   To have information about the preparation phase of each technique
5   To understand the working principles of nanocharacterization techniques by associating them with technological facts and scientific principles
6   To learn the applications of technics with on-site studies and laboratory trips

1 General introduction to nanoconstruction: material characterization and nanotechnology engineering; different approaches and analyzes of characterization
2 Introduction to Advanced Spectroscopic Techniques; UV-Vis Spectroscopy; Photoluminescence spectroscopy; Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); Raman
3 UV-Vis and Time-resolved spectroscopy
4 UV-Vis and Time-resolved spectroscopy analysis and evaluation of results
5 Determination of organic and inorganic bond structures (FT-IR, Raman)
6 FT-IR and Raman analysis and evaluation of results
7 Size measurement (DLS) and zetapotential of nanoparticles
8 Mid-term exam
9 Mechanical properties and characterization of thin films: Nanoindentation
10 Nanoindentation analysis and evaluation of results
11 Advanced Magnetic characterization techniques (VSM): Introduction to magnetism, hysteresis curve, M-H cycle, Temperature-related magnetization, Magneto-optic Kerr effect
12 Electrical characterization techniques: electrical resistance in thin films, Hall effect, Magnetoresistance, dielectric, capacitance, resistivity, Four point probe measurement, Thin film thickness measurement

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given by visual expression, simulation, discussion and homework/ presentation applications. Applications will be made using device and students will be better informed.
