Course Objective

In the context of this course, the students will learn fundamental principles of biochemistry, structures, functions and metabolisms of protein, carbohydrate, lipid and nucleic acids as well as regulations of these metabolisms.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the importance of the water and chemical reactions occurred in the biological systems,
2   Describe the DNA and RNA structures and functions,
3   Explain the structures and general properties of the amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids,
4   Explain the enzymes , as biological catalysts, function and catalyst mechanisms, kinetics and explain the importance of coenzymes which are necessary for catalytic activities of enzymes,
5   Write synthesis and degradation reactions of carbohydrates, fatty acids and explain the functions of enzymes that catalysed these reactions.
6   Discuss conversion of pruvate that is degradation product of glucose into acetyl-CoA and steps of further degradation of acetyl CoA for energy production.
7   Explain the differences of glyoxylate cycle from citrate cycle and its metabolic importance.
8   Explain the structures of complexes that play in electron transfers and know their relationships with other pathways and explain ATP synthesis.

Assessment Criteria

Meaningful learning of the basic concepts given in presentations, association of concepts with each other, establishing the cause-result relationships and making comments by using the information available for problems and evaluating idea generation are carried out with mid-term, final and resit exams, homework and presentations.
