Course Objective

The course will include a description, definition and magnitude of hazardous waste
problem. Risk assessment and risk management. Environmental legislation, hazardous
waste characterization and site assessment, waste minimization and resource recovery.
Chemical, physical and biological treatment. Thermal processes (incineration),
transportation of hazardous wastes, ground water contamination, landfill disposal,
injection well disposal and finally site remediation.

2   Knowing the waste transformation and minimising
3   Knowing the waste treatment techniques
4   Defining the advantages and disadvantages of thermal tratment applications
5   Knowing the ecological effects of hazardous waste storage area
6   Knowing the remediation of the polluted area

2 Description of Hazardous Substance & Hazardous Wastes, Sources & Classification of Hazardous Wastes
3 Genereal Chem. & Organic Chem, Environmental Chemical Process, Biochemistry and Toxicology, Chemical Perspectives of Hazards
4 Chemistry of Inorganic and Organic Hazardous Wastes and Their Toxicology
5 Assesement of Exposure Potential: Transport Process
6 Physical Waste Treatment Process: Phase transation, filtration, sedimentation, particle removal, membrane processes, sorption, distillation and strippng, draying and evaporation and extraction
7 Midterm examination
8 Chemical Waste Treatment Process; acid-base neutralization, precipitation, floculation, oxidation-reduction, electrolysis
9 (cont.); chemical extraction and leaching, ion exchange, destruction, photolytic reaction, reaction with water
10 Biological Treatment Process: biodegradation, aerobic and anaerobic treatment, composting and land treatment, bacterial destruction of PCBs
11 Thermal Treatment and Incineration Process; thermal treatment methods, incerable wastes, types of incinerators, soil incineration, emissions, wet air oxidation
12 Reduction, Recycling and Resource Recovery and Waste Elimination Options, Immobilization, Fixation and Disposal
13 Ground water remediation
14 Deep well injections and ground water pollution
