Course Objective

This course aims to teach the operation of wastewater treatment plants to protect water quality with an emphasis on fundamental principals. It gives the ability of management and organization to solve the problems facing wastewater treatment operations. Lectures cover the operation of the physical, chemical, and biological treatment units and the wastewater treatment plant management as indicated in the course syllabus.

2   Describability, detectability, and solvability of problems relating with WWTPs
3   Setting the records of WWTP operational data
4   Definability of the problems facing WWT operations and management ability of them
5   The ability of decision making for better and efficient WWTP operation

2 Management of Wastewater treatment plants: Themanagement of financial sources, Process control, Maintenance, and Laboratory
3 Permits, Records, and Reports in WWTPs
4 Process Instrumentation and Automatic Control Systems
5 Preparation of Plant Maintenance Programme
6 Puming Stations, Bar racks: Process control, operation, recording, etc.
7 Midterm examination I
8 Grit Chambers: Process principles, control, records, etc.; Primary Settling Tanks
9 Basic Chemistry and Microbiology of the Activated Sludge Process, Operation of Conventional AS Process, Instrumentation
10 Operation of Modified Activated Sludge Processes, Instrumentation, Process Control, etc
11 Activated Sludge Separation/settling Problems
12 Midterm examination II

Assessment of student progress regarding the course objectives will be made through continuous private communications during the semester with students and through midterm examinations and homework assignments. Cumulative assessment will be addressed through standard course evaluations at the end of the semester.

Assessment Criteria

The method of evaluating the progress will be through homework (10%), first mid term exam (20%), second mid term exam (20%), final exam (50%).
