Course Objective

Urban renewal, which is one of the technical tools of spatial planning, plays an important role in the realization of a physical and social design by involving the work of reviving old, deteriorated and worn-out urban parts. Today's global dynamics cause changes in the functions of cities and transform urban areas into control centers where production-related decision-making and orientation processes take place, rather than places where production and the circulation of goods take place.The realization of such a change brings along the transformation of urban land use types as well as the functions of the city. Within the scope of the course, the changing content of the phenomenon of renewal in urban planning and especially the transformations created in urban areas in the globalization process will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to list economic, social and spatial renewal criterias of the built urban environment (Knowledge),
2   will be able to define the renewal costs of urban environment as economically (Knowledge),
3   will be able to explain items of Cost-Benefit Analysis items through examples (Comprehension),
4   Will be able to question the reasons for the renewal of the built environment from the economic point of view in a globalizing world (Analysis)
5   Will be able to question the reasons why urban transformation applications gained importance as a basic planning tool in the world and in our country (Analysis)
6   Will be able to discuss the current planning system and the physical and social effects of urban transformation. (Evaluation).
7   Will be able to propose strategies to integrate into social policies related to the renewal of the built environment (Synthesis)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be conducted face-to-face and through classroom presentations. Students will learn topics by listening to visually supported presentations and participating in discussions through question and answer. Students will be given homework topics in the 4th week, and they will be asked to improve their work on the given topics until the end of the term and turn them into a final assignment.
