Urban design practice is a crucial part of urban design education. This course aims at
developing urban design skills of students on various area-based approaches. Within the
context of this course, students will be able to work on different subject areas and
projects.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 WEEK 1 Explanation of the project subject and discussing its importance.
2 WEEK 2 Definition of design guide and research of design guide examples. Establishment of working groups.
3 WEEK 3 On-site (in Birgi) detection studies, collection of sample settlement identity values. List of urban settlement characteristics.
4 WEEK 4 Compilation of the settlement findings collected from the field as a source for the settlement design guide. Transferring written and drawn documents.
5 WEEK 5 I. Interim Jury / Midterm Presenting the compiled settlement findings as a source for the settlement design guide.
6 WEEK 6 Creating the design guide content format specifically for Birgi. Creating section / subsection titles, content studies.
7 WEEK 7 Discussions on design guide proposals.
8 WEEK 8 Discussions on design guide proposals.
9 WEEK 9 Preparation and completion of the layout design guide proposal.
10 WEEK 10 II. Interim Jury / Project Interim Delivery

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In context of area-based projects, students will obtain the required information within
group work. After having obtained the necessary data and documents the synthesis works
and projects will be carried on by the students individually.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

There will be at least two urban design practices. Each practice will be evaluated in
equal ratios.

Course Policies and Rules

The course aims to cover at least two projects. Therefore, at the first phase of each
project, there will be an analysis and research part relative to the problem area and
subject. In the second phase, the obtained data will be analyzed as to fit the
identified topic frameworks and be elaborately deciphered in context of the synthesis
work held. Oral and written material will be realized with the help of all sorts of
data and documents obtained and this will be followed by a project proposal to fit all
the required criteria.
