Course Objective

The aim of the course is to teach the contemporary knowledge on the behaviour of marine fishes. The use of information and data on behaviour in the development of new technologies for fish capture and in the problems of management is also covered.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the diverse and complex ethology of marine teleost fishes.
2   Identify the importance of sensory inputs to fish behaviour.
3   Describe the effects of environmental characteristics on behaviour of marine fishes.
4   Describe the effects of food and predators on behaviour of marine fishes.
5   Relate the historical development of marine capture fisheries to fish behaviour.
6   Recognize the need for behavioural research on marine fish to improve stock asessment.
7   Demonstrate an ability to design experiments or research surveys for marine fish behaviour.
8   Interpret and discuss critically results from their own research work and/or that of other researchers.

Course Contents

1 Introduction Course outline, textbook, and references. Some key concepts in behavioural ecology. Introduction of some basic approaches in fish behaviour studies. Evolution and behaviour. Genetics and behaviour.
2 Study of Fish Behaviour Tools and devices needed to observe behaviour of fish. Analysis methods used in fish behaviour studies. Laboratory studies. Monitoring fish in their own environment. Some short underwater videos.
3 Role of Vision in Fish Behaviour Environmental conditions and vision. Visual system. Visual behaviour.
4 Underwater Sound and Fish Behaviour Underwater sound. Hearing abilities of fish. Auditory system. Role of auditory system in behaviour.
5 Role of Olfaction in Fish Behaviour Olfactory system. Olfaction and feeding. Olfaction and reproduction. Olfaction and predator avoidance.
6 Role of Lateral Line in Fish Behaviour Physiology and morphology of lateral line in fishes. Effects of the physical and chemical properties of seawater on behaviour.
7 Feeding Behaviour Foraging behaviour. Predation risk and feeding behaviour.
8 Reproductive Behaviour Mating behaviour. Spawning behaviour. Parental care.
9 Shoaling Behaviour Shoaling and schooling. Functions and advantages of shoaling.
10 Midterm Exam
11 Some Behavioural Patterns Temporal changes in fish behaviour. Intertidal teleosts. Cave-dwelling teleosts. Migratory teleosts.
12 Marine Fish Behaviour and Fisheries (I) Marine fish behaviour and fisheries activities. Trawl fishery.
13 Marine Fish Behaviour and Fisheries (II) Purse seine fishery. Pots and traps. Gillnet, longline and hook fishery. Use of behaviour to reduce bycatch.
14 Marine Fish Behaviour and Stock Assessment Importance of empirical research in behavioural studies and their application in the real life problems regarding the assessment and management of fisheries resources.
