Course Objective

The objective of this course is to give students a clear understanding of the fundamental concepts of anisotropic elasticity especially for orthotropic materials.

2   To understand engineering problem types which can be solved by this theory
3   To learn orthotropic structures
4   To solve anisotropic problems in general engineering problems

3 Examples of anisotropic materials
4 The bending of a rod by moments
5 The bending of a rectangle plate by moments
6 The bending of a rod posesing cylindrical anisotropy

8 The general case of distribution of stresses in homogeneous anisotropic body
9 Generalized expressions for the stress functions
10 Generalized plane deformations in a homogeneous anisotropic body
11 Midterm 2
12 Torsion
13 The symmetric distribution of stresses in a hollow cylinder
14 The bending of an orthotropic cantilever with a rectangular cross section

Theory of elasticity of an anisotropic elastic body, S.G. Lekhnitskii

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical background is explained in details with presentations. Numerical examples are given for better understanding of theory. Homework (an ANSYS application) is given.
