Course Objective

Within the scope of this course, wastes formed due to marble production and quarrying, utilization of marble wastes and evaluation of environmental impacts of marble quarries with respect to quarrying and environmental interactions will be covered. In addition, up-to-date regulations in Turkey and in the world related to marble quarrying will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Should be aware of waste and tailing concepts in mining applications
2   Should recognize and classify the marble wastes of production plants and quarries and their formation mechanisms
3   Should be aware of and capable of applying waste management in marble quarries and production plants
4   Should know the related laws and regulations to prevent possible environmental impacts of marble quarries (TC, EU, UNCSCEAR raws and regulations)
5   Should know the preparation steps of an Environmental Impact Assessment Report for a marble quarry

1 Definition of waste and tailings in mining, examples and environmental impacts
2 Definition and importance of marble operation in mining applications
3 Place, cause and progress of marble waste formation in marble quarry and production plants
4 Classification of tailings, efficiency evaluations of marble production plants and quarries working on tailings
5 Waste management, evaluations based on Turkey and EU
6 Determination of utilization possibilities of wastes in different industries
7 Homework and presantation
8 Environmental impacts of marble operations, obligatory laws and regulations on the adaptation period of EU, Environmental laws
9 Additional laws and regulations on establishment and production stages of marble quarries (water pollution and control, wild life protection, etc.)
10 Investigation of environmental impacts of West Anatolian marble quarries by up-to-date examples
11 Environmental impacts and re-utilization of abandoned marble quarries
12 Preparing a sample Environmental Impact Assessment Report on marble operations
13 Preparing a sample Environmental Impact Assessment Report on marble operations
14 Evaluation of structural elements of some marbles with respect to environment and human health and determination of area of usage (EU and UNSCEAR criterion)
