Course Objective

This course is aiming to investigate solution possibilities and determine problems created by dust and noise, which are generated during underground mining activities, negative effect the working environment and causing the decrease of the efficiency of work.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define various gases encountered in underground mines, properties, occurrence causes, effects of this gases, precautions to be taken and how to improve the working environment,
2   apperence of dust during production, the factors affecting the concentration of dust and dust sources, physical and chemical properties of dust, dust measurement, dust hazards and methods of struggle with dust,
3   will be able to do the noise control and definition, importance, effects on human of Sound and noise, noise levels created by equipments, which used at underground and open pit mining.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Properties of gases found in quarries, formation, effects, and precautions to be taken to improve the environment: Carbondioxide, carbonmonoxide, nitrogenoxides, hydrogensulfide
2 Hydrogen, radon, methane, and methane drainage
3 Nitrogen and usage areas nitrogen
4 On some of the exposures seen in workers underground, investigation of the incident, finding the causes and reaching a solution with precautions to be taken
5 Dust formation and the dust source, factors affecting the dust concentration
6 Physical and chemical properties of dust, dust measurement methods
7 Hazards of dust, coal dust explosions
8 Struggle methods against dust
9 Definition, importance and effects on human of sound and noise
10 Noise levels of various loaders used in underground, various types and characteristics of drilling machine
11 various types of drilling machines, dozers, carrier trucks, various types of excavators, loaders, scrapers and graders used in open pit mining, and their noise levels
12 Noise control at underground mining
13 Noise control at open pit mining
14 Midterm exam
