Course Objective

Main aim of this lecture is to give some basic definitions about electromagnetic field theory, empedance equations for homogeneous horizontal layered medium, apparent resistivity and phase equations, theories of natural and controlled source magnetotelluric methods, two and three dimensional modelling, theory and applications of inversion in electromagnetic methods (finite differences, conjugate gradient, SVD, Occam solutions), applications of electromagnetic methods in geothermal, mining and hydrocarbon explorations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to have an idea about vector analysis and electromagnetic theory
2   To be able to recognize the empedance equations for homogeneous horizontal layered medium
3   To be able to know apparent resistivity and phase equations
4   To be able know the theory of artificial and natural source magnetotelluric methods
5   To be able to know multi dimensional modelling of MT and CSAMT methods
6   To be able to know the theory and applications of inversion in MT and CSAMT methods
7   To be able to have an idea about the applications of electromagnetic methods in geothermal, mining and hydrocarbon explorations

6 OCCAM inversion method in electromagnetics
