Course Objective

Being able to apply inverse modeling to the engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the purpose and scope of inverse modeling in geophysics.
2   To be able distinguish the nonlinear problems.
3   To be able to determine the parameters by using different inverse modeling methods.
4   To be able to determine the parameter resolution.
5   To be able to do singular value decomposition.

2 Least Squares solutions on linear problems
3 The classification of linear problems and least squares solutions
4 Singular value decomposition
5 Weighted least squares method
6 Solving the non-linear problems with steepest descent method
7 1st midterm
8 Gauss-Newton and damped least squares method
9 Marquardt-Levenberg inverse modeling method
10 Estimation of Marquardt factor, convergence criteria and initial parameters
11 Inverse modeling with Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method
12 2nd Midterm
13 The parameter resolution
14 The inverse modeling applications on geophysics
