Course Objective

The course begins with a general introduction to bitumen and related definitions. The manufacture of the bitumen from refinery, the main applications on roads, the modification processes as well as other engineering applications will be studied in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To classify asphalt sources, formation and classification of bituminous materials.
2   To compare asphalt cements and their area of application.
3   To choose available materials and equipments for flexible pavement construction purposes.
4   To investigate bituminous hot mix design process with advance in technology.
5   To interpret the role of bitumen for the rehabilitation of pavement
6   To edit the literature data concerning the use of highway materials and applications.
7   To relate theoritical knowledge to experimental data

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction. Definition of bitumen, bituminous materials, asphalts and tars and related terms. 1. Homework and presentation assignment
2 Bitumen. Sources of asphalts. Historical development. Classification of bituminous materials. Petroleum (crude oils and its types). Asphalts, natural and petroleum asphalts.
3 Petroleum asphalts. Manufacture of asphalts in refinery. Solvent extraction method. Air blowing and blown asphalts. Cracking and cracked asphalts. Asphalts cements. 1. Homework submission and presentations
4 Tests performed on asphalt cements. Penetration Test, Ductility Test, Softening Point Test, Loss on Heating Test, Flash and Fire Point Test, Spot Test, Solubility Test, Specific Gravity. Asphalt Cement Specifications 2. Homework and presentation assignment
5 Liquid Asphalts. Liquid petroleum asphalts (cut-back asphalts). Testing of liquid petroleum asphalts, viscosity and float test etc. Use of liquid petroleum asphalts. Liquid petroleum asphalt specifications.
6 The general standards related to cut back asphalts
7 Asphalt Emulsions ,Manufacture of asphalt emulsions.,Advantages and use of asphalt emulsions. Modified asphalts. 2. Homework submission and presentations
