Course Objective

The objective of this course is to teach students the fundamental aspects of design and analyses of geotechnical applications related to energy and sustainability, geotechnical design concepts related to some of the current and emerging energy projects, Constitutive behaviour of soils, including stress, strain, heat and mass transfer, and the application of this knowledge in practical engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   LO1. Understand constitutive behaviour of soils, including stress, strain, heat and mass transfer.
2   LO2. To get information on problems about the soil depending on the thermal changes.
3   LO3. Design and analyse foundation of energy geostructures.
4   LO4. Provide sufficient information on design and analyses of foundations of energy geostructures.

Course Contents

1 Constitutive behaviour of soils, including stress, strain, heat and mass transfer, and the application of this knowledge in practical engineering problems.
2 Constitutive behaviour of soils, including stress, strain, heat and mass transfer, and the application of this knowledge in practical engineering problems.
3 Thermal changes effects on the engineering behavior of soils: Permeability, Shear strength
4 Thermal changes effects on the engineering behavior of soils: Volume deformation of soils
5 An introduction to energy geostructres.
6 Geotechnical design concepts related to some of the current and emerging energy projects
7 Geotechnical design concepts related to some of the current and emerging energy projects
8 Designing geothermal foundations and geological storage facilities
9 Designing geothermal foundations and geological storage facilities
10 Other energy geotechnical problems include the design and analyses of offshore foundations for oil and gas platforms
11 Other energy geotechnical problems include the design and analyses of offshore foundations for oil and gas platforms
12 Carbon geosequestration facilities subjected to high temperatures, pressures and hydrological conditions
13 Design and analyses of geotechnical applications related to energy sustainability

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Courses will be held in class (3h). The course will be done by presentations. Students should take a printout of these notes before coming to class. Then, course notes, which include important parts, will be presented in the class. At the same time, students can complete blank parts of the presentation on their notes while listening.
