Course Objective

The goal of this course is to provide the students with a fundamental understanding of switch mode power supply circuits.

Further to provide the students;
- be familiar with the essential elements of a complete switch mode power converter circuits,
- know how to obtain PWM ( pulse with modulation) signal through a simple comparator block and appreciate the frequency components of a PWM signal.
-know how to reduce ripple using smoothing circuits,
- be able to analyse a major switch mode power converter circuis using state space averaged technique.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will have good undersanding of the basic principles of switch mode power conversion,
2   Students will be able to choose appropriate power converter topologies and design the power stage with associated feedback controllers,
3   Students will be able to analyze and design switch mode power electronic converters for various applications,
4   Students will be able to describe the various losses and estimate the efficiency of a power electronic system,
5   Students will be able to appreciate the relative merits of MOSFET's, IGBT's and bipolar transistors as switches,
6   Students will be able to appreciate electromagnetic design of converter circuits in respect to electromagnetic interference,
