Course Objective

The aim of this course is to increase the awareness of designing barrier-free living environments and to raise awareness about design for all, within the students who have received design education before.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding the concept of disability, universal design approach for everyone, accessibility and barrier-free design criteria
2   Understanding the relevant regulations and understanding the responsibilities in this field as an architect
3   Being able to evaluate barrier-free design criteria through urban and building examples from different scales
4   Being able to examine the current environment / practices critically
5   Being able to develop solutions for the built environment according to barrier-free design principles

Course Contents

1 Introduction to course; presentation of methodology of this course; announcing of seminar
2 Watching and evaluating short films/documantaries that aim to increase the awareness of the disabled / disability situation / disability in the society
3 Disability phenomenon, definitions and classifications
4 Within the scope of architecture for all, presentation of architectural arrangements for barrier-free design and accessibility and evaluation through examples
5 Universal design criteria
6 National and international standards, practices, contracts for barrier-free design
7 Legal regulations for barrier-free design
8 Team work; workshop etc.
9 Team work delivery and presentation
10 Seminar presentation of students and discussion
11 Seminar presentation of students and discussion
12 Seminar presentation of students and discussion
13 Seminar presentation of students and discussion Delivery of seminar presentations
14 Evaluating the presentation submissions and the period in general Detailing the final homework

4. Presentation of the study topics determined by the students in accordance with the determined themes in a participatory and controversial manner
5. Assessments and discussions on sample buildings/environments.
