Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the design and synthesis of photosensitizers that exhibit the desired properties for various applications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to design photosensitizers with features designed for various applications
2   Analyze the synthesis of photosensitizers
3   To be able to obtain the opinions about photodynamic processes at molecular and mechanical levels
4   To have knowledge about the properties of photosensitizers used in different application areas such as medicine, environment and safety
5   To be able to obtain a broad knowledge of the current state of synthesis, properties and applications of photosensitizer compounds

1 Definition, history and importance of photosensitizer.
2 Mechanism of photosensitizers. Electronic events of singlet oxygen production and Photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.
3 Photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.
4 Design and synthesis of phthalocyanines for photodynamic therapy
5 Boron-dipyromethene (BODIPY), 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and phenothiazinium phototensitizers for photodynamic therapy
6 Design and synthesis of dual purpose photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and imaging applications
7 Design and synthesis of suitable derivatives by combining photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy with nanoparticles
8 Synthesis of photosensitizers for oxidation reactions
9 Synthesis of photosensitizers for oxidation reactions (continued)
10 Use of photosensitizers for the decomposition of chemical waste causing environmental pollution
11 Use of photosensitizers for the disintegration of chemical wastes causing environmental pollution (continued)
