Course Objective

The course aims to provide knowledge on classification, raw materials, production methods, physical and chemical properties and application areas of biodegradable fibers.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   This course is expected to be able to classify the biodegradable fibers
2   To help the student to understand the properties of biodegradable fibers
3   To be able to compare the application areas of biodegradable fibers
4   To develop the students theoretical and practical abilities and ability to present and criticize arguments
5   To give the students further ideas about alternative raw materials and production methods for fibers.

1 Definition and classification of biodegradable fibers. History of biodegradable fibers. Biodegradable fiber market.
2 Raw materials for biodegradable fibers. Natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers
3 Biodegradable fibers from natural polymers: Definition and classification Vegetable fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas
4 Biodegradable fibers from natural polymers: Animal fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas.
5 Biodegradable fibers from natural polymers: Regenerated cellulose and protein fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas.
6 Biodegradable fibers from other natural polymers: Alginate and chitin/ chitosan fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas.
7 Biodegradable fibers from polymers produced by microorganism: Poly(hydroxyalkanoate) fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas.
8 Biodegradable fibers from synthetic polymers: Poly(lactic acid) fibers: Production techniques, physical and chemical properties and their application areas.
