Course Objective

To analyze the longitudinal and cross sectional images of fibers by different microscopic techniques (Projection microscopy, optical microscopy, Polarize and electron microscopy). To teach preparation of sample. To investigate the images of fibers

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to compare the different microscopes used in textile investigations
2   To be able to use different microscopes used in textile investigations
3   To be able to prepare the fiber sample for optical observation
4   To relate the fundamental optical definitions and working principles of microscopes
5   To distinguish the cross sectional and longitudinal images of fibers

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Different types of microscopes used for textile investigations and general definition of their properties (fluoresans microscope, polarize microscope etc.).
2 Different types of electron microscopes and their general properties.
3 Sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy observations.
4 Cross-sectioning techniques (microtome, and metal plate) and their applications.
5 Preparations of cross sections of different fibers (cotton, wool, flax, PES and PA) and practices.
6 Permanent sample preparation techniques and practices.
7 Investigation of permanent samples by optical and projection microscope.
8 To take photos of cross sectional and longitudinal views of samples and practices
9 Measurment with photo-microscope and practices.
10 Stereo microscope practices on fibers.
11 Fluorescence microscope practices on fibers.
12 Determination of maturity of cotton fibers by polarize microscopy.
13 Separation of different fibers and measurements of birefringence by polarized microscope.
14 Practice on working principle of electron microscope and on electron microscope images of fiber samples.
