Course Objective

The objective of this course is to teach fundamental knowledge of radioactivity and radioactive minerals and also to teach geology and exploration of radioactive ore deposits.

3   To be able to understand formation of uranium deposits

1 Introduction (origin, behaviour, physical and chemical properties of uranium (U) and thorium (Th)
2 U and Th contents in the earth and in rock types Primary and secondary radioactive minerals
3 The most common radioactive minerals and their properties Silicates, oxides, phosphates, sulfates, carbonates, vanadates
4 Methods for determination of radioactive minerals
5 Volcanic and granite-related deposits
6 Metamorphic related uranium deposits
7 Intrusive uranium deposits
8 Uranium ore deposits in sedimentary environments Sandstone, Quartz-pebble conglomerate and unconformity-related deposits
9 Uranium ore deposits in sedimentary enviroments (continue) Phosphate, black shale and lignite-coal deposits
10 Genesis of sedimentary uranium mineralizations Source, transport and deposition
11 Characteristis properties and distribution of radioactive ore deposits in the Word and Turkey
12 An example of sediment-related uranium deposit in Turkey Koprubasi (Manisa) U deposit
13 Prospecting for radioactive ore deposits
