Course Objective

The aim of this course is to identify detailed optical properties of minerals such as: refractive indices, compositional variations in optical properties (extinction angle, pleochroism, refractivie index etc.), variations in optical properties related to the function of cutting direction, identifying minerals of isomorphic series.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To understand optical variation related with the cutting direction
2   To be able to identify mineral composition-2V-index of refraction properties
3   To be able to measure indices of refraction for minerals
4   To be able to identify members of isomorphic series via optical properties
5   To be able to understand the variation in refractive index-optical sign in biaxial minerals
6   To be able to evaluate the properties and reveal all of the optical properties of a given mineral
7   To be able to identify minerals
