Course Objective

Deterioration in natural stone buildings and statues, reasons of deterioration and restoration techniques are discussed in this class.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To comprehend the deterioration related to the chemical events that are caused by the environmental effects.
2   Ability to decide about the natural Stones and alternative materials that can be used for restoration.
3   Ability to choose comparative purification methods in restoration.
4   Ability to choose organic or inorganic additives.
5   To raise awareness of old buildings and cultural heritage

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Reasons of deterioration in natural stones Reasons of deterioration related with material characteristics Lithology of stone, petrographic characteristics, structural properties of stone, chemical composition of stone, physico- mechanic properties of stone.
2 Deterioration caused by environmental conditions Chemical reactions
3 Deterioration caused by environmental conditions Physical events, temperature changes, moisture, water s changing into ice, air pollution, sun s effect, fire effect, corrosion of ores.
4 Deterioration caused by vegetative organisms, fungi and animals. Deterioration caused by humans negative effects.
5 I. Exam, I. homework submission
6 Restoration of natural stone, protection, documentation, identification.
7 Cleaning and choosing the method.
8 Cleaning the stains on the stone, iron stains, cpper stains, mortar and lime stain, cleaning the paint.
9 Stabilizing and protecting; its aim, preparation.
10 Stabilizing materials (organic and inorganic), choosing material.
11 II. Exam, II. homework submission
12 Stabilizing methods, protection and maintenance after treatment
13 Fixing and filling
14 General maintenance.
