Course Objective

This course aims at defining public participation, presenting theories of democracy with the circumstances under which they have developed, getting to comprehend public participation approaches in planning, interpreting the participation processes in Turkish planning system as a case of practice, analysing the relationships between participation and democratic planning, proposing a normative participation model and revising the actual one.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students, will be able to define public participation (Knowledge),
2   Will be able to list different democracy approaches historically (Knowledge),
3   Will be able to describe public participation approaches (Comprehension),
4   Will be able to interprete the participation models in Turkey (Application),
5   Will be able to relate participation to democracy (Analysis),
6   Will be able to propose a new (normative) participation model (Synthesis),
7   Will be able to revise the actual participation system (Evaluation).

9 Participatory Practices in Turkey
10 Urban Social Movements
11 Homework/Submission/Presentation Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other in this week.
12 A Normative Model of Public Participation

14 On the Revision of the Turkish Participation System in Planning

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homeworks will be given to students in 7th Week and they will be asked to prepare their homeworks on the subjects given to them.
