This course is designed to introduce students to basic principles and information on coastal engineering.

3   To understand Physical Oceanography; Water Masses, Depth, Salinity, Density and Temperature; Waves, Current Systems and Tides
4   To learn Wave Mechanics; Wave Fundamentals and Classification of Waves
5   To understand the Basic Definition and Formulation of Regular Waves
6   To study wave shoaling, refraction, diffraction, breaking and reflection
7   To emphasize the importance of vertical breakwater under non breaking waves
8   To learn the concept of wind waves

6 Linear Wave Theory (Wave Properties: Profile, Wavelength, Celerity, Wave Group, Particle Velocity, and Acceleration)
7 Other Wave Theories; Non Linear Shallow Water Wave Theories; Cnodial Wave Theory; Solitary Wave Theory
8 Wave Transformation: Wave Shoaling, Refraction and Diffraction
9 Wave Transformation: Wave Breaking and Reflection

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Students will be responsible for midterm exams and homework assignment. Students will present their homework to the rest of the class. The final grade is based on midterm and final exam and homework. The homework assignment will be distributed at the end of the 6th week.

The homework assignment will be distributed at the end of the 6th week.
