Course Objective

Marine algae are classified in various groups because of their containing pigment substances (chlorophyll, carotenoids, etc.). When various algae groups compared, there are many differences in terms of cytological, morphological, biochemical characteristics, reproduction properties and life cycles. The cytological and biochemical characters are more important than morphological and reproduction properties in marine plants. Cytological features are the base of the classification. The aim of this lecture is to learn basics of the classification and identification of marine algae.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn the fundemental components of classification of marine algae.
2   To constitute a background for marine algae taxonomy.
3   To get a knowledge about research methods and equipments for cytological studies on marine algae.
4   To define the concepts of reproduction and growth in marine algae and establish the relations between them.
5   To get a basic knowledge about bioecological features and the role in ecosystem of marine algae.
6   To get a knowledge about cytological features and functions of marine algae.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What are marine algae What is the difference between terrestrial and marine plants The different cytological features between marine and terrestrial plants will be explained. The physiological characteristics about the marine algae is going to be explained.
2 The cytological features of Marine algae The cell organelles (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, flagella, chloroplast, pyrenoid, vacuol) is going to be explained in marine algae.
3 Cell Organelles Cell organelles are going to be explained with illustrations.
4 Cell Organelles (continue) Cell organelles are going to be explained with illustrations.
5 Cell Organelles (continue) Cell organelles are going to be explained with illustrations.
6 Cell Organelles (continue) Cell organelles are going to be explained with illustrations.
7 Research subjects Presantations The research subjects are going to be presented.
8 Motility Organelles Some algae in various groups has motility organelles called flagella. The place and morphology of this flagella could be different in different algae groups.
9 Plastids Plastids are very important features in photosynthesis. They are cytoplasmic organelles that can only be found in eukaryotic plants which includes chlorophyll and other pigments.
10 Pyrenoids and vacuols The functions and places of pyrenoids and vacuols in cell is going to be explained.
11 The biochemical features of Marine Algae What are the pigments and storage substances and their functions in marine algae
12 Cell Growth and division The growth and division forms in marine algae are going to be explained with the illustrations.
13 Introduction to the taxonomy of marine algae The main marine plant groups and their main characteristics.
14 The classification of marine algae The features of the main marine algae groups.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The theorical lessons is going to explained with digital presantations and various illustrations.
The presesantation duties which is given to the students is going to develop research activities.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The research subjects are going to be given to the students at the beginning of term. After that every student is going to prepare a report about his/her subject, share with other students and make a presantation. At the end of the term the final exam will be carried out which includes the lessons and the research reports of each student.
