Course Objective

Primary considerations in the selection of a material for coastal structures are availability, strength, durability, cost, maintenance costs and service life. The selection of materials for coastal use must also consider structural stability, flexibility and impact of the environment on the material. This course is offered to provide civil engineers with specific guidelines for selecting materials and techniques in the marine environment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the basic concepts related to the construction materials for coastal structures.
2   Able to describe the concepts used in the terminology of coastal structures.
3   To distinguish among the types of construction materials in coastal structures according to their properties.
4   To determine the properties of construction materials by using experimental data.
5   To decide the choice of construction materials type according to use of the place and purpose.
