Course Objective

In this course, The main parameters in adsorption, surface area and related topics will be disscussed and explained in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, the student will be able to; describe the Introduction to Physical Adsorption, Historical, Adsorption isoterms
2   describe the adsorption forces, Thermodynamics of Adsorption
3   describe the adsorbents; porous and non porous solids of high surface area (meaning of pore and porosity)
4   describe the classification of Pore Sizes (the Micropores, Mesopores and Macropores, Surface Area); pore size distrubition
5   know the physical Adsorption of gases by nonporous solids; explain the Type II isotherm, BET model, Mathematical Nature of the BET equation
6   know type of isotherms and their classifications
7   know adsorption from aqueous solution
8   learn experimentel methods in adsorption; know evaluation of the adsorption data and usage of the isotherms

4 Point B; Calculation of the Specific Surface from the Monolayer Capacity; Determination of Specific Surface from Type II Isotherms
5 The Physical Adsorption of Gases by Porous Solids: The Interpretation of Type IV Isotherms; Estimation of Specific Surface from Type IV Isotherms; Some Special Cases of Pore Systems;
6 Kelvin Equation; Estimation of Pore Size Distribution by the Mercury Porosimeter; The Type V Isotherm; Examples of isotherms and their properties.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Fourteen, three-hour lectures backed up with one midterm examination and one workshop and interactive presentations. All the didactic material is preliminary available to the student both in paper and electronic form. The books used to prepare the lectures are available at the Library of the University. Further data and/or information may be obtained consulting the Library of the University also using the new wireless network.
