Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach effects of the control of solidification mechanism to the molding production.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to define the basic principles of solidification
2   Be able to explain the properties of the products that gained with molding
3   Be able to use the basic principles of sustaining and gating design for producing the faultless molding pieces.
4   Be able to select the relevant molding method for a spesific piece.
5   Be able to verify the implemented molding method

Course Contents

1 The liquid and solid concepts. The technological importance of solidification
2 Homogeneous nucleation and supercooling.
3 Homogeneous nucleation
4 The effect of nucleation and growth during the transformation of liquid to the solid phase.
5 Structural excessive cooling. Solidification of alloys. Eutectic or peritectic solidification
6 Mid-term exam
7 Mid-term exam
8 Classification of alloys according to the solidification range and the range of solidification: The centre line resistance
9 The real piece of casting solidification and formation of macrostructure
10 Solidification rate and heat transfer in solidification
11 Solidification rate and heat transfer in solidification
12 Pulling
13 Vertical gas intake runners. The fluidity of liquid metal. Hot laceration and other molding defects.
14 Sand mold casting, and various casting methods
