Course Objective

The aim of the course is to give knowledge about solar technologies that are used in architecture to decrease energy requirement of the building through case studies and let the students prepare and present a paper about these applications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explaining energy problem in the world and describing renewable energy resources,
2   Defining solar energy technologies that are used in architecture to decrease energy requirement of buildings,
3   Defining passive and active uses of solar energy in architecture,
4   Defining solar control and orientation of the building to maintain comfort conditions,
5   Illustrating integration of these technologies into architecture during design phase.

3 Historical Evolvement of Solar Architecture and Use of Solar Energy in Architecture
4 Creating comfort conditions with the use of Solar Energy: Passive and Active Uses of Solar Energy
5 Passive Use of Solar Energy in Architecture, history and principle elements: solar windows, solar walls, greenhouses
6 Examples of Passive Use of Solar Energy in Architecture, Determination of presentation dates for the student groups Determination of the student groups, presentation subjects and presentation dates for 11th, 12th and 13th week presentations.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be taught in a lecture, student group presentation and discussion format. The lectures will be given for 10 weeks. Then student groups will present their research about buildings that use solar technologies on the 11th,12th and 13th weeks. General recognizing will be done on the last week.
