Course Objective

The objective is to introduce the historical assets with a rich historical past, but which lost these values considerably, constituting the identity of Izmir to the future architects and to raise consciousness about protecting them and surviving and making use of them. In this context, historical buildings and conservation problems in the city will be examined.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to explain the historical development of Izmir city.
2   Ability to specify and explain the works of art from different eras which live up to our time.
3   Ability to discuss the issues of protection of the historical monuments located in the city with samples .
4   Ability to compare the historical structures of the same type located in the city.
5   Ability to interpret the historical values in the city.
6   Ability to present a research about the historical fabric of Izmir city in visual, written and oral form, using up-to-date technology.

Course Contents

1 Introduction to the course, aim, method and contents of the course.
2 The location of Izmir, the origin of its name and its historical development process. Works surviving up to the present from every period. (Lecture-showing, question and answer teaching method, discussion method) (PRACTICE 1 - Brain storming)
3 Works of Prehistoric-Aiolian-Ionian Periods. (Lecture-showing, question and answer teaching method, discussion method)
4 Works of Hellenistic - Roman - Byzantine Periods. (Lecture-showing, question and answer teaching method, discussion method)
5 General View of Ottoman - Turkish Periods. (Lecture-showing, question and answer teaching method, discussion method) (PRACTICE 2- Game-based learning)
6 Traditional housing architecture in Izmir. Religious Buildings. (Lecture-showing, discussion method) PRACTICE 3 - Mapping
7 Midterm exam (Midterm exam week is the 7th and 8th weeks. Depending on the exam schedule, the midterm exam can be taken to the 8th week.) The exam will be realised face to face.
8 Commercial Buildings. Cultural Buildings (Lecture-showing) PRACTICE 4 - Group discussion

- On-site observation, examination, discussion within the scope of technical trip -
- Developing the ideas discovered through in-class debates, evaluations, interpretations.

Additionally, an individual teaching method, question and answer teaching method, game-based learning, brain storming, mapping will be used.

The students are expected to be interested, sensitive and observatory particularly within the context of historical buildings and environments in the city besides participating in the course actively.

Final %50 (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5, LOÇ6)
Class participation %10 (LO4, LO5, LO6)

Informational aspect of learning outcomes (LO1, LO2) are measured by midterm exam and final assignment; comprehension aspect (LO2, LO3) are measured by midterm exam and final assignment; application aspect (LO4) is measured by final assignment and class participation; analysis aspect (LO5) is measured by final assignment and class participation; evaluation aspect (LO6) is measured by final assignment and class participation.
Evaluation regarding the class participation shall be determined by student's attendance, active participation in the discussions during the class and qualitative contribution in this context.
