Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the student with knowledge about availability and applicability of different types of reinforced concrete slabs and foundations, which are classified as planar members, in architectural and structural design projects and also to introduce students with general principals and analysis methods related with design of simple reinforced concrete slabs and foundations.

2   Understanding the design and analysis methods of reinforced concrete slabs
3   Comprehending fundamental principles in making decision about the type of reinforced concrete slab system to be used for different architectural design

5   Understanding fundamental principles of making decision about the type of foundation system depending on characteristics of architectural and structural design and soil conditions

1 Introduction to reinforced concrete slabs: Classification of slabs. General information about different types of slabs and investigation of construction conditions.
2 Introduction to beam slabs: Structural analysis and reinforcement of one-way slabs.
3 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of one-way slabs. Numerical examples about one-way slabs.
4 Numerical examples about one-way slabs.
5 Introduction to two-way slabs: Structural analysis and reinforcement of two-way slabs.
6 Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of two-way slabs. Numerical examples about two-way slabs.
7 Numerical examples about two-way slabs.
8 Introduction to ribbed (joist) slabs: Structural analysis and reinforcement of one-way ribbed slabs. Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of one-way ribbed slabs.
9 Numerical examples about one-way ribbed slabs.
10 Mid-term exam.
11 Reinforced concrete foundations: Different types of foundations and classification of foundations due to construction types. Assumptions related with ground under foundations and stresses using in designing foundations.
12 Single footings. Code provisions related with dimensions and reinforcement of single footings. Design of single footings subjected to axial load and combined axial load and bending.
13 Numerical examples about single footings subjected to axial load.
14 Numerical examples about single footings subjected to combined axial load and bending.
