Course Objective

Through the interactive discussions and digital presentations, examining the concept of Utopia
on the main utopia samples produced in the fields of literature and architecture in the period from the past to the present-day. With this kind of examinations, to enable students to produce some ideas and questionings in the context of different life, space, city, system alternatives.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the concepts of utopia and distopia,the historical development of these concepts, and the transformations of literary, architectural, cinematic utopias/distopias lived in the historical process and present day
2   Associate the information special to the concepts and transformations of literary and architectural utopias with concrete examples, productions
3   Use the data obtained- in the researches, digital presentations and visualization studies realized on the extent of literary or architectural utopia/ distopia examples selected from the different periods
4   With the class presantations, question the potentials of the researches and visualization studies developed on the base of the selected examples, in terms of reflecting the concepts of utopia and the common themes seen in utopias of different eras
5   Develop the researches and presentations in the light of critics expressed in questionings

1 Meeting, giving general information of the course content
2 Presenting the conceptual expansion related to utopia; in this context, discussing the definitions of utopia/distopia phenomena, the general features special to utopia, the transformations of utopia and its spatial reflections lived in the historical process, the development of utopia in different disciplines such as philosophy, literature, architecture, cinema.
3 Utopia and space readings on literary texts, discussing the general features and the important ones of Ancient Utopias
4 Via the students' digital presentations and videos, discussing the selected examples from Ancient Utopias
5 Discussing the general features and the important ones of Renaissance Utopias
6 Via the students' digital presentations and videos, discussing the selected examples from Renaissance Utopias
7 Discussing the general features and the important ones of utopias and distopias special to Post Industrialization Period
8 Via the students' digital presentations and videos, discussing the selected examples from utopias and distopias special to Post Industrialization Period
9 Completion of the student presentations of the utopia texts special to the Post Industrialization Period and discussing the utopias in urban, architectural field
10 Submission of the first assignment on literary utopias; Discussing the general features and the important ones of urban, architectural utopias special to 19th Century in Post Industrialization Period
11 Discussing the general features and the important ones of urban, architectural utopias special to 20th Century in Post Industrialization Period

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Teoretical Lectures:
In the course, theoretical lectures and digitali visual presentations related with the subjects will be realized accompanied by the student discussions.
Student Assignments/Presentations: The student researches developed on the base of the literary or urban, architectural utopia examples selected from the different periods, the presentations and visualization studies of the researches will create the content of the student assignments/presentations. These assignments will be gathered.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

35% of the grade is first assignment/presentation to replace the mid-term exam, 15% is second assignment/presentation, 50% is final assignment to replace the final exam. Like final assignment, the make-up assignment which replaces the make-up exam is 50% of the grade.

Second Assignment/Presentation: %15 (LO3, LO4, LO5)
Final Assignment which replaces Final Exam: %50 (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5)
