Course Objective

This course aims to give basic knowledge and to discuss the uses of this information in the study of planning on the subjects. It is also aims to discuss the properties of hosing as a special product, characteristics of housing markets, the relation of housing supply and demand, forms of housing provision, housing finance and housing policy issues.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to describe the housing problem according to its different functions
2   will be able to explain the concepts of housing supply, housing need, housing gap and housing demand and the relationship between the concepts.
3   will be able to express the characteristics of urban housing markets
4   will be able to interpret the effective variables about households housing choice
5   will be able to compare housing policies pursued in different periods in Turkey
6   will be able to compare the characteristics of different forms of housing provisions
7   will be able to analyze an existing housing area about forms of housing provisions

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Week1: Discussing housing question, defining housing as a special product, housing as a basic human right
2 Week 2: Characteristics of housing markets, explaining and discussing distinctive features of housing markets than the other goods and services markets
3 Week 3: Variables affecting households housing choice, households characteristics, housing characteristics
4 Week 4: The concept of housing need, housing demand, the basic dimensions of housing demand, factors affecting the housing demand
5 Week 5:The concepts of static and dynamic housing gap, its calculations. Discussing the characteristics of different types of housing
6 Week 6: Housing density and relations between housing types, Different forms of housing provisions. Students will be given homework topics in this week.
7 Week 7: Mid-term Examination
8 Week 8: Individual housing provision, housing cooperatives housing provision, housing provision by small capital house builders
9 Week 9: Housing provision of housing cooperatives unions supported by Municipalities, housing provision of mass housing companies, squatter housing
10 Week 10: Concepts of housing policy and social housing policy, housing policies pursued in Turkey, housing statistics between 1950-2000 in Turkey.
11 Week 11: Housing provision after 2000's in Turkey. Housing statistics after 2000's in Turkey.
12 Week 12: Housing issues in Development Plans, housing renewal and housing relations. Homeworks will be finished till this week.
13 Week 13: Presenting and discussing of homeworks
14 Week 14: Presenting and discussing of homeworks
