Course Objective

The aim of this course is to increase students' sensitivity for space, consolidation of existing knowledge and skills and gain new ones about livable residential areas,
In this context, it is also aimed to discuss the qualities of livable residential environments, accessibility and security in residential areas, public and semi-private and private space relations, issues of sensitivity to the needs of different user groups and to evaluate residential areas in this regard.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to list the factors affecting perceived density in a housing development
2   will be able to describe the principal issues to be taken into consideration in design of liveable housing environment
3   will be able to define the principles and standards for barrier-free environments
4   will be able to explain the principles for safer housing areas.
5   will be able to analyze an existing housing development for liveability

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Discussing the relationship between human needs and built environment
2 Identifying housing and environmental quality criteria, discussing indicators of livability and livable environments
3 Discussion of the elements forming liveability of the residential areas
4 Density and form relationships, site image, identity and personalization.
5 Access to dwellings, streets for people, traffic calming and safe pedestrian access, the basic principles in the design of bicycle paths.
6 The facilities to be provided for people with disabilities in and around housing
7 Mid term Examination
8 Basic principles for taking into consideration in designing children's play areas and facilities for children
9 Common open spaces and socio-cultural facilities around housing areas
10 The basic principles in the design of safe environments
11 Landscaping, foothpaths and site furniture
12 Management, maintenance and refuse disposal
13 Presenting and discussing of homeworks
14 Presenting and discussing of homeworks
