Course Objective

This course gives introductory concepts to sociology as a discipline by way of considering the prevailing theoretical approaches, social structure, structural transformation and processes, socialization, institutions determining the social conditions, different cultures based on different human communities and the theories on culture and social structure. The course intends to evaluate fundamental human institutions (family, kindred, economy, politics, religion, education, media, work, urbanization, migration, globalization etc.) from a cross-cultural perspective and to interpret their impacts upon societal structures, spatial developments and formation of cities.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to express the basic concepts of sociology, exchanging and functioning of community structure, relations of the individual - society and inter-communal
2   will be able to explain the various aspects of culture (intercultural interaction, relationship between place and culture, cultural exchange, relationship with socialization etc.).
3   will be able to discuss the fundamental institutions having major roles in shaping the individual and society and the impacts of institutional and structural variables upon social and personal development
4   will be able to describe planning, implementation, analysis and reporting methods of sociological research projects
5   will be able to relate the impacts of changes in the structure of the individual and society on the formation of space and cities

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Basic concepts related to sociology, place of sociology science in human life, the development of sociological thought and theories of sociology, the main features that separates sociological knowledge from the other information avalanche.
2 Sociological theories, modern theoretical approaches. Globalization and the changing world, types of community and the different stages of socialization as a determining phenomenon on individual.
3 Sociological asking and answering (research process and methods). Theoretical thinking in sociology - new sociological theories.
4 Social interaction and daily life (social rules of interaction etc.), socialization, the flow of life and aging, culture and society, socialization of gender, life-long socialization. Self formation of the individual as a social entity within the framework of acculturation and acculturation relationship. The creation of social life and theories of action and meaning
5 What is the culture Various dimensions of culture, culture change and cross-cultural interaction, relationship of culture and society.
6 The institution of family and intimate relationships, the sociology of health, illness and disability and spatial reflections of them.
7 Stratification and class, class and stratification theories, distinctions of social class and social mobility in today's western society. Social class. Poverty, social exclusion, welfare, and global inequality
8 Midterm examination or homework
9 Sexuality and gender, the different theoretical approaches related to gender inequality, race, ethnicity and immigration (ethnic integration and conflict, globalization and migration).
10 Institution of religion in modern society and development of the religion institutions and sociological approaches. Sociological perspectives on the science and knowledge production and scientific and unscientific information. Media institutions and development, sociological approaches upon examination of to the mass media
11 Development of organizations and networks, development of educational institution and evaluation of these institutions from the sociological perspectives.
12 Labor and economic life (the change of production structures and the effects on social structure, the changing nature of work and study and job insecurity, unemployment), output of the sociology of deviance and crime, and the effects in the social interaction process, theoretical approaches.
13 Policy, government, and terrorism. Addressing the basic concepts of political sociology, policy and social change, theories of nationalism and the nation, terrorism. Administration, politics and government, the classical description on the power structures in society, the modern state.
14 Cities and urban areas. Theorizing urbanity, the development of cities, towns and globalization. Cities and global governance. Environment and risks as a matter of sociological. Technological developments and the risks.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be taught in the form of conference presentations, discussions, readings online (live lecture-based online training model). Students will learn by attending lectures, listening to lecture presentations, doing the readings given, and learning from discussions during the lecture.
