Course Objective

Evaluation of the potentials of GIS technology, which have reformed city planning, in our country and in the world.
How to use these technologies in the city planning process.
Presentation of software; database development and management method.

Technology management, management of technology and inovasyon approaches. To raise awareness about the importance of technological innovations and entrepreneurship in the professional field.

Teaching and implementing the Geographical Information System, which is one of the essential parts of urban design and city planning process. For this aim, collecting spatial data related with urban area, saving into databases, editing spatial data, creating attribute and spatial queries, using variable statistical tools, crating thematic maps; preparing presentation and layouts showing virtual city model.

To discuss the value of new technologies and concepts (such as, Web based GIS, Computer Aided Design, Remote Sensing, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality) in the future of the planning profession.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding Geographical Information System, new technologies and technology management concepts. Understand the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation.
2   Understanding the direction of development GIS technologies. Providing innovation in city planning with technology management.
3   Managing a Geographical Information System process and using one of the recent GIS software.
4   Managing and editing spatial data which are collected for GIS.
5   Using attribute and spatial query functions Using statistic tools and creating presentations.
6   Creating thematic maps, preparing presentations and layouts.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What are the information systems What are the components Innovation concept and Technology management.
2 Introducing GIS software that are used in planning, Features of ArcGIS and QGIS.
3 What are the new technologies that are related with GIS Concepts of digital base, table, vector, data, and database.
4 Lecturing functions of main programs, virtualization of present data and starting sample GIS project.
5 Entering data into a present database and continuing the sample CBS application.
6 Explaining thematic map functions and creating sample applications on case project.
7 Attribute query over data table, sample application of attribute query.
8 Creating spatial query with spatial parameters and examining them on case project.
9 Mid-term / Lab. Application
10 Explaining dimensioning and scale commands. Examining taught subjects on sample CBS application.
11 Forming a new digital base maps on a sample field.
12 Forming a spatial database related with base map and urban area.
13 Connecting external databases to CBS system and managing database.
14 Adjusting print properties and page settings of all kinds of analysis and thematic maps and creating presentations.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be held in the computer laboratory, with GIS software (ArcGIS and QGIS).
Conception, definitions and new technologies related GIS will be explained with virtual presentation via SAKAI.

The course will be held in the computer laboratory, with GIS software (ArcGIS and Geomedia Pro).
Conception, definitions and new technologies related GIS will be explained with virtual presentation.

Theoretical issues, concepts, definitions and related new technologies related to GIS; will be presented with visual material in packages, during the application on the computer lab.
